Worker killed at west Athens construction site

A man died Wednesday morning after being hit by a dump truck at a west Athens construction site.

According to Athens-Clarke County police, the accident was that was reported at 9:24 am occurred at an active construction site next to the intersection of Tallassee Road and Westchester Drive.

Police said an initial investigation determined that a dump truck, driven by Bobby Freeman, 50, of Lithonia, had emptied its load of asphalt and was backing down a road under construction, where 27-year-old Dustin Jenkins of Chatsworth was painting the roadway.

Jenkins had his back to the truck when the vehicle hit him.

National EMS personnel were transporting the injured worker to the hospital when he died, according to police.

The incident remained under investigation, and police asked for anyone with information about it to contact Officer James Trotter at 762-400-7326 or James.Trotter@accgov.com.

The incident involved the 12th vehicle related fatality in the county this year.
