Longtime resident announces candidacy for Athens-Clarke County Commission

Longtime Athens resident and community advocate Zander Mason today announced his candidacy for the Athens-Clarke County Commission in District 5. Mason, who was born at St. Mary’s Hospital and raised in a family deeply rooted in Athens, lives in the Homewood Hills neighborhood with his wife Avery.

In addition to Homewood Hills,

District 5 encompasses neighborhoods including Forest Heights, Moss Side, and Country Club Estates.

Mason currently works as a financial advisor and has served the community through leadership roles with organizations including Bigger Vision of Athens, Athens Jaycees, Palm House Recovery, and the Rotary Club of Athens.

He is also an Athens Academy graduate, a University of Georgia alumnus, and a proud graduate of the 2023 LEAD Athens class.

“I was born and raised here and I want my neighbors to feel the same sense of safety, opportunity, and connection that I did growing up,” Mason said.

“Our community is facing challenges that are solvable and addressable, but we need leaders who are willing to listen and act. I am not a politician. I am a neighbor who wants results for District 5.”

Mason explained that he is launching his campaign well ahead of Election

Day to meet as many voters as possible and to truly hear their concerns.

The campaign announced that a formal series of events in District 5neighborhoods will begin in the new year. These gatherings will be designed

to give residents a direct opportunity to share their priorities and ideas for the future of Athens.
