Athens man charged for eastside murder

An Athens man reportedly was arrested Monday for allegedly murdering another man two days earlier as the victim sat in his car on a street in east Athens.

Floyd Junior Johnson was identified as the shooter who killed 52-year-old Fowler Drive resident Gordon Dexter Jones by reviewing video footage from surveillance cameras in the neighborhood where the killing occurred, on Vine Street near North Peter Street, and also from talk on the street that made its way to police, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department's public information officer, Lt. Shaun Barnett.

Despite the street talk, no witnesses to the shooting had been located or have come forward, Barnett said, adding that a motive for the murder was unknown, and that the victim and suspect "were known to each other."

Johnson, booked into jail with an address on Noketchee Drive was arrested Monday night as he left his home, according to Barnett. He was charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon/

The shooting on Fairview was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, and when officers arrived they located Jones dead in the driver's seat of his 2014 Dodge Challenger, killed by a single gunshot, according to police.

Police said the investigation was ongoing., as detectives were attempting to identify and locate a female who was at the scene when the fatal shooting occurred. ACCPD would like to speak with this female and encourages her to reach out to them.
