Athens man dies three days after being struck by van while crossing the street

By Joe Johnson

An Athens man died Monday from injuries he suffered three days earlier when struck by a van while crossing a busy westside roadway, according to the Athens Clarke County Police Department.

Scott Roy Paton, 60, was crossing in the area of 2230 W. Broad St. at about 9:15 p.m. Friday when he was struck by a westbound 2008 Honda Odyssey.

The pedestrian was at fault in the collision because he did not yield to the vehicle, ACCPD said in a Tuesday news release, which noted that Paton was not crossing at an intersection or using a crosswalk.

The van’s driver remained at the scene of the crash, and Paton was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

The county coroner on Monday notified ACCPD that Paton had succumbed to his injuries.
