Firefighters on Thursday reportedly found the body of a man after extinguishing a fire at his home off of Lexington Road in east Athens.
Clarke County Coroner Sonny Wilson identified the victim as Alvin Beckmon, 57, of 210 Springtree Road.
"We are deeply saddened for the loss that the family is suffering and our thoughts and prayers are with them," Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services Chief Jeff Scarbrough said.
According to officials, the fire was reported by a neighbor shortly before 2:30 p.m., and firefighters found Beckmon's body after extinguishing the blaze.
The victim lived there with his mother, who was out of state at the time, the coroner said.
He was located in a bedroom that had been converted to a den, Wilson said.
Beckmon's body was to be transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Crime Lab for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
Wilson said the fatal incident was being investigated by ACCFES, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. and the Clarke County Coroner's Office.
