Athens passenger seriously injured in DUI wreck, driver arrested

A Bogart man was arrested Monday night after he crashed his pickup truck while allegedly intoxicated, seriously injuring his passenger, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

Robert Franklin Cunningham, 53, of Lone Star Road was driving the pickup north on Cleveland Road near Huff Lake Road shortly after 7 p.m. when the vehicle crossed over to the other side of the road and struck a tree, according to the report.

The passenger, a 53-year-old Zatella Lane woman, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, according to the report.

Cunningham declined to be evaluated by National EMS personnel and was taken inti custody.

The report contained no further details.

According to the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office, Cunningham was jailed on charges of DUI, traveling too fast for condition, failure to report an accident with injuries, driving while license was revoked or suspended and operating an unregistered vehicle.

He was still being detained Wednesday afternoon in lieu of bonds totaling $6,000 bond.
