A teenage Athens boy was arrested Sunday afternoon in connection with a fatal shooting the night before during a block party at an eastside apartment complex, according to Athens-Clarke County police.

Police said that 15-year-old Marquise Malcom allegedly shot and killed 38-year-old Carlos Harper at about 11 p.m. on Carriage Court in the complex located off Barnett Shoals Road.

Responding officers who located Harper on the ground with gunshot wounds tried life-saving measures, but the victim was transported by ambulance to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

Malcom reportedly shot Harper after Harper confronted him over something inappropriate the teen might have said or done to the victim’s daughter during the block party.

The suspect could not be located after the shooting, but eastside patrol officers on Sunday located Malcom and arrested him on warrants charging him with felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a person under 18, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

The investigation is still active and anybody with information is asked to contact Detective David Harrison at (762) 400-7361 or david.harrison@accgov.com.
