An Athens teen was arrested Sunday for the alleged sexual assault of a homeless woman in west Athens.

The incident occurred at about 8:30 a.m. that day in the 200 block of Tallassee Road where the 50-year-old woman said she was sleeping when 19-year-old Bryant Kemonte Harper tried to have sex with her against her will, according to Athens-Clarke County police Lt. Shaun Barnett.

“She was familiar with the suspect from the area but they were not in a relationship,” Barnett said. “At most, they could be described as acquaintances.”

After the incident the woman called 911 and responding officers were able to locate Harper in the area but not at the scene itself, said Barnett, who is ACCPD’s public information officer.

After an investigation, Harper, who has a Creekwood Drive address, was booked into the county jail at 1:42 p.m. on charges of criminal attempt to commit rape and sexual battery.

He was being detained without bail being set as of Monday afternoon.
