Athens woman charged with setting up man's shooting in dispute about money

By Joe Johnson

An Athens woman was arrested Wednesday for allegedly setting up a man to be shot, according to an Athens-Clarke County police official.

Simoane Ashley Binns, 27, of Bethany Court had an apparent dispute involving money with the victim, a 52-year-old Sunset Drive resident, said Lt. Shaun Barnett, public information officer for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department.

According to Barnett, on Tuesday evening, Binns brought the victim to the Parkview Homes apartment complex off West Broad Street, where the victim was shot by a third party in the 100 block of Florida Avenue.

The victim was transported by National EMS to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the officer said.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that Binns facilitated this incident by bringing the victim to the area for the purpose of being shot,” Barnett said. “The victim and Binns are known to each other. At this time, Binns is not believed to be the shooter.”

According to Barnett, “Preliminary information indicates there was possibly some sort of dispute about money between the victim and Binns.”

Binns was arrested the day after the shooting and charged with aggravated assault.

As of Thursday afternoon, she was detained at the county jail without bail being set.

The shooter had yet to be identified, and the investigation was ongoing.

That's quite a defiant look from the criminal. It's as if she knows our corrupt DA will give her a slap on the wrist.
