An Athens woman on Thursday died from injuries she sustained in a two-car collision eight days earlier.
According to Athens-Clarke County police, 95-year-old Mary Case was injured the morning of Oct. 5, when she was driving a 2020 Toyota Prius on West Broad Street, just west of Sycamore Drive, and collided head-on with a 2021 Acura RDX occupied by a 63-year-old female driver and a 60-year-old male passenger. Both occupants of the Acura were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said, and Case was taken to the hospital with a suspected broken ankle.
The hospital notified police on Thursday that Case had died “due to complications caused by injuries sustained in the crash,” according to police.
The woman became the 21st traffic fatality this year in Athens-Clarke County, far surpassing the previous record high of 16 people killed in vehicle collisions in 2009.
