Athens woman struck and critically injured by train

By Joe Johnson

An Athens woman was critically injured when she was struck by a train on CSX Railroad tracks where they run parallel to Jefferson Road.

Sabrina Leigh Iona, 36, of Oak Grove Road reportedly stepped into the train's path shortly before noon on Wednesday.

The train's engineer said that the woman had been spinning in circles between tracks and did not heed repeated blasts of the train engine's horn, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

Officers arrived at the scene and found Iona with a grave head wound, and first responders provided her with assisted breathing before she was transported to the hospital where severe internal injuries were discovered and intubation was implemented, according to the report.

She reportedly still survived as of 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
