Barrow County woman and newborn son found safe after being reported missing

A woman who had disappeared with her newborn son from their home in Winder were determined by police to be safe and sound.

Kanijah Nakia Manuel and her child were was last seen at their home on Wednesday morning.

After her family reported the pair as missing the Winder Police Department enlisted the assistance of the public in finding them through social media, stressing that the woman and child were “endangered.”

The case was subsequently picked up and reported by area news organizations, including Classic City News.

Police on Friday canceled the missing persons alert, reporting on social media that the 24-year-old woman and her baby “have been found safe.”

Capt. Chris Cooper, commanding officer of WPD’s Criminal Investigations Division, said that Manuel had made contact with police in another jurisdiction.

“We spoke with her on the phone today and she met with local police in person where she is at to confirm that she and the baby are safe,” Cooper said. “She informed us that she left on her own will and just needed time away from the family she was living with previously here in Winder.”
