Bomb scare at county land fill

By Joe Johnson

The regional bomb disposal unit recently responded to the Athens-Clarke County Landfill to investigate a possible bomb.

On the morning of September 15th workers found a container that they thought looked suspiciously like an explosive device and they called 911.

It was described as a tin container with the words PB Smokeless Powder on it and it contained 10 cylinders wrapped in duct tape,

The University of Georgia-based Bomb Disposal Unit responded to the Lexington Road facility along with county firefighters.

The bomb sqad’s robot removed the cylinders from the container and placed them on the ground, where they were X-rayed.

It was determined that the cylinders contained an inert powder such as concrete mix. In the absence of wires and other components it was decided that it wasn’t an explosive device and it was destroyed on the spot.
