A starving dog was recently rescued from a home in Athens where the apparent skeletal remains of a second dog were found.

The surviving dog was said to be in critical condition at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Meanwhile the owner is facing felony charges as the Athens-Clarke County Police Department investigates.

Police officers had responded to the Glendale Heights residence on December 20, a day after county Animal Services was notified about a possible dead dog inside a shed on the property.

The officers located inside the shed a malnourished dog and skeletal remains that were collected as evidence.

“The bones are believed to be canine remains at this time,” said police Lt. Katie Jenkins.

It is believed that the surviving dog had eaten the body of the other after it died.

When a necropsy confirms that the bones were that of a dog, she said, warrants would be sought charging the owner with two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Each felony count is punishable upon conviction by one to five years in confinement and a fine of up to $15,000, or both.
