Boy injured in drive-by shooting in east Athens neighborhood

By Joe Johnson

A 14-year-old boy reportedly was injured Thursday night when his and other homes were sprayed by gunfire.

According to Athens-Clarke County police Lt. Shaun Barnett, the shooting occurred at about 7:15 p.m. in the 200 block of Highland Park Drive, a side street that runs parallel to Cedar Shoals Drive in east Athens.

The boy received a non-life-threatening injury from a bullet ricochet, according to Barnett, ACCPD’s public information officer.

He said detectives believed that the boy was the intended target of the shooting, which damaged all three apartments in the victim’s triplex.

All of the homes were occupied at the time, Barnett said.

Police had no suspects or a description of the vehicle from which the gunshots were fired.
