A child was seriously injured when she was struck by an SUV while crossing the street west of downtown Athens.
The incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when a group of kids were crossing West Broad Street at Chase Street, and one of them was hit by a 2006 Toyota Tundra that was traveling east on Broad.
"One of the pedestrians, an 11-year-old female, was struck by the Tundra. The pedestrian was transported by to a local hospital by EMS with suspected serious injuries." said Athens Clarke County police Lt. Shaun Barnett.
"The pedestrian's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening," he said. "The driver of the Toyota is a 52-year-old male of Stephens, and he is not expected to be charged. "
The Broadacres Homes apartment complex is located on the north side of Broad Street and a Dollar General store is on the south side.
A witness told police that the victim was with a group of children, who ran into the road in front of the SUV's path.
He said that the children did not use a crosswalk.
