The following was released today by the city of Winder:
On October 26, country-rap star Jelly Roll brought smiles and healing to the Apalachee High School (AHS) Community through a free concert at Jug Tavern Park. Organized as part of the healing process following the tragic events on September 4, the performance gave the students, faculty, and AHS families space to reconnect, reflect, and find support in one another.
AHS Principal Jessica Rehberg welcomed the community: “We have a lot more healing to do. This is one piece of it. One day, where we get to feel better, we get to be together, and we get to smile and laugh. And that’s part of our healing. Another part is talking to each other and being there for each other. And I know this guy thinks that’s really important that we do that.”
On stage, Jelly Roll emphasized the importance of remembering those lost while celebrating the strength of the community. He said “Coach A, Mrs. Irimie, Christian, Mason will not ever be forgotten. Not by America, not by this community, not by Apalachee High School. This has been one of the greatest acts of humanity I have ever seen - this community come together, this high school standing up, this principle standing strong. I have so much love and respect for y’all.”
After the hour-long performance which included well known singles, I Am Not Okay and Save Me, Jelly Roll signed autographs and posed for photos with attendees. Following this, he privately met with the victims’ families at the Winder Community Center, spending over an hour getting to know them posing for photos, and sharing words of support and encouragement.
The City of Winder was honored to host this healing event for our AHS community, and we extend a heartfelt appreciation to Jelly Roll and his team for taking the time to visit our town, despite having a sold-out show in Atlanta later that evening. We will remain grateful for not only his time but his kindness and compassion. This concert served as a powerful reminder that the healing process takes a step forward every time people come together.
Mayor Jimmy Terrell stated, “It’s events like these that highlight the spirit of Winder. We are Barrow Strong, and seeing our community come together in support of Apalachee High School Showed the best of who we are and how determined we are to heal.”
