A severe thunderstorm roared through the Athens area on Thursday evening,.
Police and social media reports that trees have been felled countywide, and Georgia Power indicated that as of 8 p.m., 22,000 customers in Athens-Clarke County were without power.
The National Weather Service said penny-sized hail and wind gusts of up to 70 mph were possible.
Athens remains under a severe thunderstorm watch until 10 p.m.
Ga Power outage map was showing something like 22,000 customers out in ACC at 8:00 pm. Whitehall Rd/Barnett Shoals/Gaines School Rd corridor was out almost all the way to Lexington Rd. Pine trees snapped halfway up at Hillsman Middle School.
