East Athens home targeted by gunfire

By Joe Johnson

A home on Simmons Street in east Athens was targeted by gunfire over the weekend, according to an Athens-Clarke County police report.

No one was home at the time, and it appeared that a 19-year-old resident might have been the intended target because all three bullets entered the house through the wall of the teen’s bedroom at the front of the residence, according to police.

The teen left home at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday to attend the Cedar Shoals-Clarke Central basketball game and did not return home until 6 a.m. Sunday.

He said that one of the bullets that entered his bedroom punched through two more walls before it landed in a steel pot in the kitchen, according to the report.

Two more bullets were found in the teen’s bedroom, one of which was on the floor between his bed and front wall, according to the police report.

All the bullets were from a larger-caliber handgun, the report noted.

Neither the teen nor two adults who live with him and were working at their jobs at the time of the incident, did not know who might have been responsible for the shooting, according to the report.
