Fire heavily damages west Athens apartment complex

Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services as of 7 p.m. Friday had pseveral units at the scene of a multi-unit fire at University Oaks Apartments, 2360 W. Broad St.

"Currently I am in the process of gathering information from on scene personnel," Battalion Chief Nate Moss said.

"From initial accounts, fire crews are in a defensive operation involving two ladder trucks utilizing elevated water streams to extinguish the main body of the fire," Moss said , "Crews are making entry into the effected apartments to verify fires are out and to confirm residents have all made it to safety.

"As of now, it appears that 14 apartment units may have been involved," according to the battalion chief, who said, "Residents are being cared for offsite. "
