Authorities are investigating the death of a woman whose body was discovered in a wooded area of the University of Georgia’s campus.
The woman died as the result of an apparent crime, officials said.
The officials indicated that the woman was not a student, and they have not released her identity.
UGA police said they received a call just after noon from a person who was concerned for their friend, who had not come back from a run at the intramural fields. About 20 minutes later, officers found the woman's body with visible injuries in a wooded area behind Lake Herrick.
The school said in a notice to students that the woman's death was the apparent result of a crime.
"We have been fully briefed on this terrible situation. Foul play is suspected, and we are already receiving support from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Athens-Clarke County Police Department to investigate this crime," UGA said in its notice.
Acknowledging that the student body had already been traumatized from the sudden death of a student in Brumby Hall the night before, UGA announced that classes were suspended until Monday.
A press conference
Police asked for anyone with information about the incident to call the UGA Police Department at 706-542-2200.
All classes have been canceled until Monday, they said.
This story may be with us for awhile. Prayers for this woman's family and friends. To me, this type of crime is rare in Athens, but maybe it's not. A murder on a jogging trail sure sounds like the perp was looking for a victim. Hold your kids tight for a few days.
Suicide at Brumby. Murder at Lake Herrick.
Rumor of Menengititis at UGA as well.
Sad news.
Catch the killer and put him on the electric chair.
