GBI identifies man fatally shot during confrontation with Athens police

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified the man killed this month during a confrontation with police in Athens as 33-year-old Joe Baythavong.of Hoschton.

The incident happened on May 12 in the 1000 block of Hull Road when Athens police officers responded to reports of a man shooting a gun.

Upon arrival they encountered Baythavong brandishing the weapon and ordered him to put it down, according to the GBI.

“(Baythavong) then pointed the gun to his head. (He) fired the gun, and one officer fired their weapon..” a GBI news release states.

Further details are being withheld pending the outcome of the bureau’s investigation.

In his obituary Baythavong was described as follows:

“Joe will be remembered for his vibrant spirit, energetic nature, and outgoing personality. From a young age, he had a love for breakdancing — a passion that reflected his creativity and joy of self-expression.

Joe had a natural ability to connect with others, forming friendships easily wherever he went. A true risk-taker, he embraced life fully, always willing to try new things and live in the moment. Those who knew Joe often spoke of his ability to bring people together and help others see life from his perspective. He carried a unique style all his own, with bright eyes and a wily, boyish smile that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Joe also had a deep passion for working on cars and was a skilled and trusted mechanic. He took pride in his craft and was always willing to lend a helping hand to friends and family who relied on his knowledge and expertise..”
