Homeless man arrested after requesting ambulance six times in 24 hours without needing one

Larry Lee Daniel

An Athens police officer last week arrested a homeless man who repeatedly called 911 requesting an ambulance when he had no medical need for one.

Larry Lee Daniel, 57, was arrested early the morning of September 12 after a security guard at Saint Mary’s Hospital reported that the man was wandering around without seeking medical attention.

The police officer who responded noted in a report, that he already had two contacts with Daniel that morning for making requests for an ambulance when one was not needed.

The officer further stated, “I was advised that Daniel had called 911 requesting an ambulance 6 times in the last 24 hours.”

The homeless man had already left the hospital by the time the officer got there, and he was later located in the area of West Broad Street and Alps Road.

“I asked Daniel if he thought it was fair he was using an ambulance to go to the hospital when he only wanted a place to stay and had no medical needs when the ambulance could be saving someone with a real medical emergency, and he did not answer. I then placed him under arrest for requesting EMS when not really needed,” the officer wrote in a police report.

“While enroute to the jail, Daniel informed me that he wanted to go back to Conyers, Ga., but Rockdale EMS dropped him off at PARMC,” a reference to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.
