An Athens man was killed Sunday night in a single-vehicle crash on a westside roadway, according to Athens-Clarke County police.
Darius Levar Stanley, 27, of Hollow Ridge Drive was driving a 2016 Audi A5 west on Tallassee Road at about 10:28 p.m. when, about 800 feet west of Chadd’s Walk, the car crossed over the eastbound lane, left the roadway and struck a guard rail before coming to a rest, according to a police accident report.
The report noted that Stanley “was not wearing his seatbelt and was injured.”
Stanley was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries, according to the report.
Several witnesses stopped at the scene, but none actually saw the car when it crashed, according to the accident report.
“The initial investigation revealed that the vehicle left the roadway at which point the driver overcorrected and lost control,” Athens-Clarke County police Public Information Officer Lt. Shaun Barnett said Monday morning.
“At this time it is unknown what caused the driver to leave the roadway initially,” he said.
The crash is beinginvestigated by the ACCPD Traffic Unit.
