Car occupied by Athens teens shot at in apparent road rage incident

A car occupied by two Athens teens reportedly was shot at this week in an apparent road rage incident.

According to an Athens-Clarke County police incident report, a 19-year-old female said she was driving on Gaines School Road Sunday night when she possibly cut off a car while pulling into the right-turn lane in order to proceed onto Cedar Shoals Drive.

After making the turn that car tailgated the teen’s car as they travelled down Cedar Shoals Drive, according to the report.

In an attempt to lose the other vehicle, the teen said she turned onto Boulder Trail Road, at which time the suspect’s car stopped and two gunshots were fired from it toward the teen’s car, which was also occupied by a 17-year-old male passenger, according to the report.

Both vehicles then fled the scene and an officer stopped the victim’s car when seeing it speeding on Cedar Shoals Drive because it fit the description of a vehicle that someone reported had been involved in a shooting, according to the report.

The officer located apparent bullet damage on the driver’s side of the car, on the post that separates the front and side doors, according to the report.

“It seems the only thing stopping the bullet from hitting the victims” was the pillar, the officer noted in the report.

A bullet cartridge casing was located at the corner of Cedar Shoals Drive and Boulder Trail Road, according to the report.

The victims did not provide a description of the shooter, but they described the suspect’s car as a newer-model silver or black Honda or Toyota that was missing a headlight, according to the report.
