UPDATE: GBI says man and woman fatally shot in Walton County

By Joe Johnson

The Georgia Bureau of investigation Friday afternoon said it was assisting police in Social Circle after the bodies of two people were discovered overnight in the Walton County community.

Few details about the incident have been released, but the GBI indicated that a man and woman had been fatally shot.

"Preliminary information indicates that during the early morning hours of May 15th, Social Circle police officers responded to Thurman Baccus Road for a report of two individuals found on the road," the GBI said in a Friday afternoon news release. "Upon arrival, officers discovered a male and a female both with apparent gunshot wounds.  Emergency Medical Services were summoned; however, both individuals were pronounced deceased at the scene. " The double-death investigation comes less than two weeks after former Athens-Clarke County police Capt. Will "Willie" Brinkley became Social Circle's new police chief on May 4.

Brinkley did not return a request for comment.

The identities of the deceased were being withheld pending notification of their next of kin.

The GBI said the investigation was "active and ongoing" and urged anyone with information about the case to contact Social Circle police Investigator Michael Jett at (770) 464-5906 or the GBI at 1-800-597-8477.
