Man injured when truck plunges into creek from Atlanta Highway

By Joe Johnson

A 34-year-old Lilburn man was injured Tuesday night when he lost control of a pickup truck on the Athens Perimeter and plunged into a creek below, according to an Athens-Clarke County police accident report.

The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. while the truck was traveling in the right lane of the perimeter’s inner loop, heading from state Highway 316 toward Atlanta Highway, according to the report.

For reasons unknown the Ford F-150 left the roadway on the right shoulder, where it struck a guardrail before crossing to the other side of the road where it travelled some 175 feet down an embankment and into a creek, according to the report.

The driver then crawled from the wreckage and was walking on Atlanta Highway near the Olive Garden restaurant when someone stopped to help, according to the report.

The driver suffered visible injuries and was transported by ambulance to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, the report noted.

The cause of the crash was being investigated by police.
