Two days after a Madison County man shot and killed an Athens man at a North Avenue convenience store and gas station, Athens-Clarke County police would not say if they knew of possible motives for the deadly shooting.

"ACCPD is still investigating the motive," police Public Information Officer Victoria Hunter said in a brief response to Classic City News.

The shooting occurred at in broad daylight Tuesday afternoon with plenty of witnesses at the Apex Chevron gas station, where police said Reginald Lang Kelley, 40, of Colbert fatally shot 52-year-old Mark Alden Howard of Berry Drive.

When officers arrived, they found a crowd of people there, some of whom said that Kelley, who was standing with other males by the store's front door, was the shooter.

Kelley indicated that the gun had been set down on newspaper stand nearby, according to police.

He was taken into custody, and after questioning was booked into the county jail at about 10 p.m. on charges of malice murder, felony murder and second-degree murder, and was being detained without bail being set.

Police asked that anyone with information related to Howard's homicide contact Lt. David Norris at (762) 400-7165 or david.norris@accgov.com.
