A University of Georgia student was killed early Friday in a single-vehicle crash west of downtown, Athens-Clarke-County Police said.

According to police, the incident happened at about 5:45 a.m. when a 2000 Toyota Camry that was traveling south on Pulaski Street failed to stop at the West Broad Street intersection and struck a rock retaining wall at the southern end of the intersection, according to police.

Martell Rashea Robinson, 18, who was the car’s only occupant, was not restrained and suffered severe injuries, police said.

Robinson was transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center where he later died, police said.

The student was originally from Columbus, according to police.

The cause of the crash was still being investigated as of late Friday afternoon, police said.
