A man who was accused of raping a University of Georgia freshman in her dorm room has been sentenced to 10 years of probation.

The probationary period for 20-year-old Theodore Bennett Angell will begin when he completes a brief period of confinement.

On Wednesday a Superior Court judge sentenced him in accordance with a plea agreement reached last month between Angell and the District Attorney’s Office.

The plea deal was made with the approval of the victim, according to a statement issued by District Attorney Kalki Yalamanchili:

“Our office consulted with the victim throughout the plea negotiation process and received her approval of the final plea offer prior to entering into the plea agreement resulting in the defendant's sentence.  The agreement helped avoid putting the victim through the trial process."

According to the agreement filed on February 12th, Angell pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated assault, sexual battery, and battery in return for dismissal of the rape charge.

According to court documents, Angell had allegedly choked, slapped and bit the 18-year-old victim during the assault that occurred in September 2024 in the student’s dorm room at UGA’s Black-Diallo-Miller Hall.

Records indicate that the victim had red marks on her neck from being choked, marks on her buttocks from being slapped repeatedly, and a bite mark on her arm. She was unable to breathe while being choked, according to the records.

Angell currently lives in Smyrna and reportedly is a student at Kennesaw State University.

He began serving the confinement portion of his sentence immediately following Wednesday’s sentencing hearing.

During his probation Angell must undergo psychosexual evaluation and treatment,
