The suspect in an alleged rape a decade ago at a University of Georgia fraternity house has been indicted.
Kyle Mearkle, 29, is accused of rape for allegedly having intercourse with an intoxicated victim who was unable to consent.
The incident allegedly occurred on New Year’s Eve 2013 at 990 S. Milledge Ave., the address for Lambda Chi Alpha. The fraternity’s UGA chapter was suspended for unrelated reasons in 2020.
According to court records, police arrested Mearkle on a warrant in June 2023, and he was released from custody upon posting bail in the amount of $25,000.
Prior to the indictment, the case had remained in abeyance, with the defense attorney filing over a dozen leaves of absence for various reasons.
Mearkle’s arraignment is scheduled for May 13.
