A man has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to spying on a young woman in the bedroom of her home in Athens.

Shayne Alan Bowden, 44, pleaded guilty to 30 counts of invasion of privacy at Feb. 7 hearing in Clarke County Superior Court.

Judge Eric Norris imposed a sentence of four years in prison and one year on probation.

Conditions of probation include a requirement that Bowden obtain psycho-sexual evaluation and treatment.

The judge barred Bowden from Athens-Clarke County during his probationary and ordered him to have no contact with his victim.

Court records indicate that Bowden was arrested in February 2024 following an investigation by the UGA and county police departments.

He was accused of secretly recording recording the victim in with a video camera hidden in her bedside alarm clock between June and September 2020.

Bowden initially pleaded not guilty to all counts, but earlier this month he withdrew that and pleaded guilty.

District Attorney Kalki Yalamanchili said he had sought a sentence of 20 years, with half to be served in prison.

However, due to language used in the indictment by the previous district attorney, the judge could only sentence Bowden as If the 30 criminal counts were a single offense.
