Police investigating possible murder of woman whose body was found in northwest Athens-Clarke County

Police are investigating the possible murder of a woman whose body was found Tuesday morning in a the woods at a subdivision in northwestern Athens-Clarke County.

Police are not releasing much information, except to say that the discovery was made during an ongoing investigation.

A police report indicates that officers were in the area of Maple Forge Drive and Lavender Road when the body was discovered.

That area is adjacent to the campus of Monsignor Donovan Catholic High School.

It had previously been searched, and the discovery was made during a follow-up to the ongoing investigation, the report noted.

"The body will be sent to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy to determine the cause of death and to identify the deceased," police Lt. Shaun Barnett said. "Until that time, we are not ruling anything out, including foul-play."

Barnett, who is ACCPD's public information officer, would not disclose the nature of the investigation that was being followed up on that led to the body's discovery .

"No additional information is being released at this time," he said.
