Prisoner on life support following incident at Clarke County Jail

A prisoner remained hospitalized and on life support following an incident last week at the county jail.

Classic City News has learned that 56-year-old Andrew McIntosh was hospitalized on Friday, possibly after another prisoner attacked him in his cell.

The Clarke County Sheriff’s Office would not confirm that information, citing an ongoing investigation. It also denied on the same basis a Georgia Open Records Act request that CCN made for any jail reports concerning the incident.

“An altercation between two incarcerated male residents occurred resulting in one male receiving serious injuries,” Sheriff John Q. Williams said in a released statement. “That resident was transported by EMS to Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital where he remains.”

The statement added, “The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate.”

According to jail records, McIntosh had been incarcerated since Feb. 1 on family violence charges for aggravated assault and cruelty to children.

He was injured during an incident that involved 41-year-old Berlin Street resident Latif Abney, CCN learned, who jail records show was booked Feb. 2 on a criminal trespass charge.

The jail’s website was updated on Monday to indicate that Abney was additionally charged with aggravated assault, apparently for the incident with McIntosh.

Classic City News on Tuesday again sought information about the incident from the sheriff.

“As of now, the sheriff has no further comment,” said Keith Sims, spokesperson for Williams. “He is maintaining communication with the family and respecting their privacy. The victim in this incident is under the care of hospital staff.”
