Resource officers who confronted Apalachee school shooter honored with national awards for valor

Two Barrow County sheriff’s deputies were honored at the National Association of School Resource Officers Conference in Texas on Monday.

Barrow County deputy Brandon King and Sgt. Chase Boyd are credited with confronting mass shooter Colin Gray.

The 15-year-old student at Apalachee High School in Winder last September murdered two teachers and two fellow students and wounded nine others with an AR-17 assault rifle.

Sheriff Jud Smith previously said the SROs worked together to confront the armed shooter and persuade him to surrender.

Organization officials said the deputies ran towards danger to save countless lives. They’re were honored with the National Award of Valor.
