Science fact of the day: Earth has a magnetic field

Earth’s magnetic field is caused by our planet’s rapid rotation coupled with its molten nickel-iron core.

Solar wind (a stream of charged particles continuously ejected from the Sun) distorts the shape of the Earth’s magnetic field into a teardrop shape.

The Earth’s magnetic field is what causes compass needles to always point north (toward the North Pole, specifically).

I learned this in cub scouts…with a compass while camping.
