Science fact of the day: Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on Earth

While Mount Everest marks the highest point above global mean sea level — it measures 8,848 meters at its summit — it is not the tallest mountain on Earth.

That honor belongs to Mauna Kea, a volcano located on the Big Island of Hawaii. Mauna Kea originates far beneath the Pacific Ocean and measures over 10,210 meters from base to peak.
