Science fact of the day: Pocosins are found along the Atlantic Coast of the United States

Pocosins are wetland bogs with sandy peat soil and woody shrubs. They are formed by the accumulation of organic matter (which looks like black muck) that gets built up over thousands of years and causes the soil to be very acidic and nutrient-deficient.

Pocosins have many environmental benefits and occur along the Atlantic coastal plain of the United States from southern Virginia to northern Florida, although due to land development, many of these ecosystems have disappeared.
