Tides originate in the ocean and progress toward the coastlines, where we observe them as the rhythmic rise and fall of the sea surface each day.

Sir Isaac Newton discovered that tides are long-period waves that move through the ocean in response to forces exerted by the Moon and Sun, but these gravitational forces do not control when high or low tides occur. Instead, regional forces that are linked to the geography and shape of the Earth determine this.
