Scout the Doodle Dog discharged from UGA vet hospital after receiving lifesaving care

Updated: Aug 16

By Joe Johnson

When he arrived at the University of Georgia Veterinary Teaching Hospital Scout was a furry bag of bones, barely clinging to life.

Someone had left the 5-year-old Doodle to die in dumpster, and when found he was badly emaciated, with every bone in his body visible beneath the skin.

On arrival at UGA, Scout weighed half of what he should, was filthy and matted, urine-soaked and covered in fleas. He was so weak he couldn’t even lift his head, much less stand or walk.

But after 10 days of care by a medical team at UGA led by Dr. Frank J. Fialkiewicz III, Scout on Monday was discharged looking much better and with a new lease on life.

Scout had required blood and plasma transfusions, IV fluids and many IV medications to keep his blood pressure and blood glucose normalized.

He is now being fostered by a woman who has years of experience caring for animals with special needs, as Scout still cannot stand on his own and needs a wheelchair during an expected long road to regaining strength.

Scout had been rescued by the Society of Humane Friends of Georgia, which has borne the cost of his medical care.

Anyone who wishes to donate towards his care can do so at https://www.sohfga.com/support-us.html.
