Shooting delays release of students from Athens schools

By Joe Johnson

A shooting incident that occurred Thursday afternoon in an Athens neighborhood caused school officials to delay the release of students who live there.

A spokesman for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department did not have details concerning the incident that happened at the Hallmark Estates mobile home park off Spring Valley Road.

"Officers responded to a discharging firearm call and then a burglary in progress at a nearby address within the park," Lt. Jody Thompson said. "It is not clear if the incidents were related so additional officers arrived to clear a residence. Due to the firearms call earlier, extra precautions were taken."

The school district had issued a notice explaining that bus riders would not be released from school "until police have notified us that it is safe for our buses to travel into the neighborhood."

Concerning the shooting incident Lt. Thompson said, "There were subjects detained related to the firearms call, but I don’t have anything else on it. Detectives are investigating and sorting things out."
