Stolen vehicle chased by GSP ends in crash, closes Athens roadway

A chase involving a stolen vehicle and a Georgia State Patrol unit Tuesday reportedly ended when both vehicles crashed in north Athens.

One witness reported shortly before 3 p.m. that she saw police cars, fire trucks and ambulances speeding northbound on Danielsville Road, with a GSP helicopter hovering above.

Athens-Clarke County police subsequently issued a public alert that for the next few hours, all lanes of Danielsville Road would be closed to traffic between Nowhere Road and Pine Lane.

"It is my understanding that a stolen vehicle and a GSP trooper were involved in a crash in the area," said Lt. Shaun Barnett, ACCPD's public information officer.

" I do not have any additional information at this time," he said.
