Tesla on autopilot abruptly stops for 2-year-old boy in busy Athens roadway

By Joe Johnson

Quwanis Moon was cruising along in her Tesla on Lexington Road early the evening of July 25 when it came to an abrupt halt.

The vehicle’s autopilot triggered the unexpected stop because of a surprise road hazard: a 2-year-old boy who had wandered onto the highway.

The car’s forward looking video camera then recorded Moon as she hurriedly ran to the child and scooped him up into safety before calling 911.

She then took the little boy out the parking lot of a nearby Dollar General store where police officer met her soon afterward,

“On arrival, I spoke with Quwanis Moon who stated that she was driving down Lexington Road when her Tesla vehicle abruptly stopped,” the officer wrote in a police report. “It appeared to be the vehicle stopped due to the child walking into the first lane of Lexington Road.”

An investigation determined that the little boy lived in a nearby residence where his 21-year-old mother had been watching a movie with other family members when the child slipped away without notice.

The officer reported that the toddler was returned home, and that he intended to notify the state Division of Family & Children Services about the incident.

A detective who responded to the scene indicated that he would also contact DFCS.
