Two arrested for shooting person on UGA campus

Two Athens men were arrested early Saturday for the shooting of someone on the University of Georgia campus.

The unidentified male victim was not a student, and UGA police said he suffered suffered gunshot wounds to his leg, and that the injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

The incident happened at about 2:17 a.m. in the area of South Jackson snd Fulton streets, UGA police said, and the arrests were made when Athens-Clarke County police conducted a traffic stop of the suspects' vehicle.

Two suspects who were quickly taken into custody were identified as Zachary Thomas Baker, 25,and Mark Luke Jarrett, 24, both visitors to campus from Athens.

Each was charged with five counts of aggravated assault, two counts of weapon on school grounds, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and reckless conduct.

Police did not indicate whether a motive for the shooting had been established.

Booking photos were unavailable as neither suspect was listed as being detained at the Clarke County Jail.

"The quick response of both UGA and ACCPD police officers was instrumental in making this case, in addition to the ready availability of security camera footage to assist in establishing the sequence of events," UGA police said.
