An elderly woman was killed Wednesday morning when she was driving in the wrong direction on the Athens Perimeter and her car crashed head-on into another vehicle.

According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, at about 5:25 a.m., 81-year-old Lizzie Rouhlac of Watkinsville entered the highway from South Milledge Avenue and drove in the wrong direction.

Traffic on the Athens Perimeter ‘s outer loop came to a standstill because of the fatal accident

Her car collided with an opposite direction traveling Mercedes Benz, and she was killed at the scene, while the 60-year-old man from Bogart who was driving the Mercedes was transported by EMS to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash caused the outer loop of the Perimeter to be closed between U.S. Highway 441 and Macon Highway near the Oconee County line for over three hours

ACCPD officers and Oconee deputies went to the scene to redirect stranded motorists. Police said an investigation remained ongoing and they asked for anyone with information regarding the crash to contact Master Police Officer Shawn Denmark at 762-400-7364, or shawn.denmark@accgov.com.
