YOUR SCIENCE FACT OF THE DAY: Mammatus Clouds

Mammatus clouds are actually other types of clouds (usually altocumulus, cirrus, or cumulonimbus) that are unique because they present with pouch-like shapes on their undersides.

These characteristic pouches are created when cold air inside the cloud sinks downward towards the Earth’s surface. Mammatus clouds often indicate that severe weather is on the way.
