Athens police investigating death of 2-year-old boy

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is investigating the death of a 2-year boy who died inside his home eastside home where evidence of drug use was discovered.

The 38-year-old mother told police that they went to sleep in her bed Christmas night and when she woke up the next morning her son was in the middle of the bed and not breathing.

She reportedly moved the child to a couch in the living room where police found him upon their arrival.

Police said when interviewing the woman they spotted a straw-like object with brown residue inside it.

She reportedly ran back into the bedroom to grab a phone charger before leaving for the hospital with a friend. The object missing when police went to get it.

A police spokesperson on Monday said that the child’s death continued to be investigated.
