Athens-Clarke County police on Tuesday said that detectives wanted to speak with a young couple that were believed to be in the area where a University of Georgia student reported she was raped last weekend.

The couple “may have seen the suspect” who reportedly attacked the 22-year-old victim at about 3 a.m. Saturday in the area of Dearing and South Church streets, according to police. The site of the attack was in a neighborhood located several blocks west of UGA’s Main Campus and is where many students reside.

Police said the victim related she did not know the suspect, who she described as a dark-complexioned black male with an athletic build who was about 5 feet, 10 inches tall, had short hair, and wore dark pants and a gray hoodie.

Police asked that anyone who believes they have information about the incident or the suspect to contact Detective Rick Dearing at 762-400- 7174 or frederick.dearing@accgov.com; or Sgt. Greg Dickson at 762-400-7070 or gregory.dickson@accgov.com.
