A 53-year-old woman was attacked by a homeless man who beat her with a bamboo culm at a camp in the woods on the outskirts of town, according to police.

The victim said that her neighbor at the camp behind 4125 Jefferson Road had asked for a cigarette early Monday morning, and when she denied the request, Lamar Lindbergh Burgess used a bamboo culm to beat her.

She called 911 from a convenience store across the street from the camp, and an officer who responded saw the woman had injuries to her face, arm and leg and that there was bleeding in one of her eyes.

The victim was transported to the hospital and Burgess was located in an abandoned building, where police said the bamboo weapon was recovered.

Burgess, 53, was arrested on a battery charge, and as of Wednesday he remained incarcerated at the county jail.

The local government will do nothing to protect the safety and quality of life for citizens living in this area? At what point do men in the area need to take matters into their own hands and take steps necessary to protect their families and neighborhoods?

Seems they both now have eye problems. The homeless situation in Athens is out of hand thanks in part (large part) to Mayor Kelly Girtz.

All those things are contributing factors. Athens has its own homeless problems, but with all the outsiders being dropped off in this sanctuary city, that multiplies the problem. That's on Girtz.

These assaults need to be reported and the assailant needs to be punished. BUT DAMN! Can't we do something to help these people and keep us safe too? I'll not give out my home address, but let's just say this happened VERY NEAR my house.

It is a very dangerous camp and surrounded by residential homes. It is growing daily. They continuously trespass on private properties in surrounding neighborhoods, break in to homes, and vandalize the vacant business on the corner. The camp is located on privately owned property, heavily wooded, and the owner does not live nearby. I hope he sees this article and will take action to help those of us who live nearby.
