The following was recorded by the campaign to re-elect Western Judicial Circuit District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez:
Athens, GA—As the 2024 election approaches, District Attorney Deborah Gonzalez is urging voters to embrace a vision of justice that prioritizes social equity, community safety, and the empowerment of marginalized groups. Despite rising challenges from her opponents, Gonzalez remains committed to advancing reforms that make the criminal justice system more accessible and equitable for everyone.
“Voting is more than just a civic duty; it’s a powerful opportunity to express your values and shape the future,” said Gonzalez, whose military family taught her the meaning of citizenship. “When you vote, you’re not just choosing a candidate—you’re endorsing the principles and policies that align with your beliefs. Every election is a chance to advocate for issues that matter to you and to push forward the ideals you value.”
Chaplain Cole Knapper, a community leader, has officially endorsed DA Gonzalez. “From the moment she was elected, DA Gonzalez has sought to fulfill a mandate,” said Knapper, a U.S. Army veteran. “No more business as usual—fueling mass incarceration by sending the Black and Brown children of Athens, Georgia, to jail for non-violent crimes such as simple marijuana possession or truancy.”
“I urge the citizens of Athens and Oconee County to ignore the racism and misogyny that has been directed at Deborah and her office since Day 1 and to look at the results,” said Knapper, an Athens native. “Violent crime is down over 10%, the 2,400 cases that were backlogged due to the COVID pandemic have been resolved, and she has continued to develop alternatives to incarceration, probation, sentencing, and conviction. In other words, she has done exactly what we elected her to do!”
Gonzalez has a proven track record of securing grants and partnerships to address critical community issues. Her office recently completed a federal training program on victims' rights, positioning her team as one of the most qualified in Georgia to advocate for individuals affected by crime. “We must champion reforms that address systemic inequalities while protecting the rights of all individuals, especially marginalized communities,” Gonzalez stated.
Central to Gonzalez's platform is a commitment to justice reform, particularly in addressing truancy through community-based solutions. “I will not support arresting non-violent truant youth because it’s unrealistic to think we can catch every student who skips school and threatening them with legal action isn’t effective if it can’t be enforced,” she explained. “When troubled youth, who need support from their families and communities, become entangled in the legal system, it only worsens the challenges facing vulnerable communities.” Instead of punitive measures, Gonzalez advocates for collaboration between schools, social services, and community organizations to support youth.
Protecting women's rights and access to healthcare remains central to Gonzalez's agenda. “I will always stand up for women and their doctors, ensuring they have the autonomy to make decisions about their health without fear of legal repercussions,” she asserted. This is particularly important in a political climate where such rights are increasingly under attack.
The stakes have never been higher, especially with the growing influence of MAGA Republicans who back Yalamanchili. “Who can we trust to safeguard our democratic processes when there are efforts to remove or disqualify voters and disrupt the counting of ballots?” Gonzalez asked. “The role of the District Attorney is crucial in ensuring fair elections and protecting the rights of all citizens.”
Gonzalez’s commitment to justice reform is reflected in her collaborative efforts with local law enforcement. Recently, her office secured a grant of $41,500 to support the Gang Activity Prevention and Prosecution (GAPP) Initiative, aimed at enhancing community safety and fostering stronger relationships between law enforcement and the communities they serve. “This grant is a testament to what can be achieved when law enforcement agencies unite for a common purpose,” said Gonzalez. “Our commitment to community safety and collaboration will strengthen trust and ensure that our neighborhoods are safer for everyone.”
As she campaigns for re-election, Gonzalez emphasizes the importance of community engagement and collaboration. “I am committed to hearing from you, the community, and ensuring that your concerns are addressed,” she said. “Together, we can build a justice system that reflects our values and supports all individuals.”
Deborah Gonzalez invites voters to join her in this crucial effort. “This election is an opportunity to unite and make our voices heard. Don’t let apathy dictate the outcomes; your voice deserves to be heard. Stand up for what you believe in. Vote for your values and help create the change you wish to see.”
This article states that Ms. Gonzalez’s office recently completed a federal training program on victim’s rights, “positioning her team as one of the most qualified in Georgia to advocate for individuals affected by crime.” As a victim advocate I wish that were true; unfortunately it is just the opposite.
The only reason the entire DA’s office attended that training is because they were mandated by a Superior Court judge to do so. That mandate resulted from Ms. Gonzalez’s continued violations of the Crime Victim’s Bill of Rights which put those victims at considerable risk. How disingenuous to say that her office is “one of the most qualified” to assist victims of violent crime.
What else in Ms. Gonzalez telling us…
